Defeated Kenwick 4.2-26 vs 18.5-113

Round 8 saw us come against Kenwick who were sitting on the bottom of the ladder without having won a game and us coming of a loss to Bassendean. With 7 changes to the side from the previous week and the forecasted weather conditions it was looking to be a closer game than most might have thought.

With Sedge going back up to league after an impressive performance against Basso and Gio earning a call up also of the back of a good game, along with other players unavailability it meant we had to make a few changes. Harro came into the side as full back, Judda returned from injury, Mick back from sipping too many Bintangs in Bali, Lincoln came up from colts and Kale back up from D1. Along with these were Killer in for his first game of the year after suffering a bad leg injury in the pre-season and Mitch Baker up from D1 for his first game in Ressies.

The siren sounded and to our disbelief we saw the Kenwick players all scrambling to change ends as they set up in the wrong direction. It took us a while to really hit our straps around the contest and start imposing our physical presence on the game. We seemed a little tentative early on and took some time to get back the game style we want to achieve. However once we started to move the ball through the centre of the ground through creating space from hard running, Kenwick had few answers. The fact that Kenwick had 3 colts back up from a tight game also did not help them at all.

With Bindo out we started Fryer in the ruck and Cuan moved to the bench as his backup. Harro down to full back was solid and was one of few who hit the contests hard early.

An unlikely first goal scorer in Bakes (paying about 15:1 I reckon) stepped up and slotted one through off the back of some hard running. The first quarter went mostly all our way with us starting to settle towards the end of the quarter. Through the second we really started to use the ball well and hit up Singo at full forward who had plenty of space. Mrsa playing higher up the ground was delivering the ball well forward and Singo was starting to have a day out. The addition of Bakes up fwd and Mick back in the side meant that it was really hard for the opposition to get the ball out once it was in.

Come half time and were looking good with the main instructions for the third quarter being not to slack off and to stick to the game plan. Not only did we not slacken off but if anything we lifted again. We really ran the ball well and our kicking efficiency given the weather conditions was excellent. Our physicality was great and our conversions were consistent and accurate. Singo again was unstoppable and Kenwick had nothing to compete with him, whether out on a lead or one on one.

Coming into the last the game was basically done so it was just a matter of not becoming selfish and stick to the team plan. By the final siren we had won by 87 points kicking an accurate score of 18 goals 5 in tough conditions and most importantly did this without suffering any injuries. Singo ended up kicking 7 for the day in a dominant performance. Bakes in for his first game impressed with his physicality and lead up game. Harro was solid all day down back along with Judda and Tiger. Tino also backed up a good performance from the previous game with another solid effort. Jnr Gilbo turned out his best game of the year so far with some impressive roving around the contest.

Back to the track Tuesday ready to take on Warnbro next week.
